Passive seat belt differences... Posted by Walt [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 87 interior fit into a '90, Todd N, Mon, 7 Jan 2002 18:17:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I recently parted out a late '88 (passive belts), hoping to use much of the interior for my early '88 (normal belts). To my dismay, much of it wouldn't fit.
Cars with passive seat belts (automatic shoulder belts) have some differences from cars with 'normal' seat belts. The seats bolt to the floor differently, so front seats won't bolt in without modification. The different floor supports also necessitate different front carpet and even the console base. The headliner shell is different, and so are the rear side panels (panels adjacent to the seat)- there aren't cutouts for the belt retractors. Passive belt cars also have a larger knee bolster (lower dash).
I always thought passive belts started being used during the '88 model year, but I have seen many '87 cars with passive belts, think they were non turbo cars(?)
But seats can be adapted. I modified some 9000 seats to fit into my '88.
