I also would recommend checking other things before the alternator. What happened when your car died? was it sudden? Did the battery light come on first? Did you have a weak electrical system for a few minutes before that? I parked at my house in my 88 900S one day, started it 10 minutes later, the battery light was on, and all the electricals were screwed up. A new voltage regulator fixed the problem. If you're car died suddenly, I would recommend checking the ground wire on the alternator, and also verify that the ground for the battery is good, and that the wire going from the alternator to the battery is good..
