Saabs one of the best kept secrets - most people just don't know what they are all about and what they are missing

Saabs are wonderful cars. Just to name a fraction of the reasons... There is an advertisement for a eclipse and there main feature of this ad was doors with side beams to improove safety - You would have to look in a history book to find this info on a saab. Dodge Neon 95 does not have power stearing & you would be doing good to get 100,000 mi - Saab power stearing is standard in cars 20 years old and you can get 300,000 - 500,000 out of a saab.

Find another car That is 15-20 years old that could climb a mountian pass as fast as an average 2001 car, have good fuel consumption, Excell when it comes to driving in the snow, and be able to hold up for years on end with high miles. And yet be a cool car to drive.

Check out the book "The Saab Story" Saab was the first in many major automotive improvements

Quality build of Mercedies...
Safety features of Volvo...
Much cooler than BMW...

Saab - abbreviation for Swedish Aircraft Corporation.

The Saab

About Saab
a. best car companies in the world
b. Saabs are built and based out of Trollhattan Sweden.
c. Saab is not your ordinary car company.
d. Saab also makes fighter jets for the Swedish Air Force.
e. Saab started making airplanes long before they made cars. Thus this has long been Saabs hallmark and source of pride (Saab Discoveries Fall 3).
f. Still today when you read an article on Saabs they still refer to the front seat as the cockpit.
g. Saab was first founded in 1937 as an aircraft manufacture for the Swedish Air Force in the second world war. Saab is an abbreviation that stands for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget or Swedish Aircraft Corporation.
h. In 1945 Saab first started to make automobiles (The Saab-Scania Story 3). In 1968 Saab merged with the long time Swedish bus manufacture Scania. The merger dissolved however in 1995 and Saab and Scania are two separate companies once again (Wilcock, Richard 23) (Saab-Scania Story 83).
i. The old Saab logo was formed in 1984 after Saab and Scania had merged. After the company split they redesigned the new Saab logo which now as of August 2000 is on all the new cars sold (Appendix A) (New corporate symbol for Saab Automobile).
j. In 1999 Saab joined forces with the inventor of the mountain bike and mountain bike manufacture Gary Fisher. Saab and Gary Fisher joined because they both felt that there businesses shared the same ideas and goals. Now these two great companies are working together to help make the best cars and mountain bikes in the world. At all major mountain bike races now the Saab name appears next to mountain bike legend Gary Fisher (Saab Announces Partnership with Gary Fisher Bicycles).
k. Saab has also for a limited time offered its 9-5 SE model in what they called the 9-5 Gary Fisher Edition. This car is a standard Saab 9-5 SE, but it comes with a bike rack and a new Gary Fisher mountain bike (Nevinczenko Sheila J.).
l. Last December Saab made a huge decision and decided to invest nearly $100 million into adding on to there main production plant in Trollhattan Sweden. These plans that Saab has put together call for a plant with a total surface area of 226,000 square feet. This is the biggest investment that Saab has made sense 1958. The much larger plant will greatly help production and will enable Saab to offer more of a range of cars then they do now. Some of the other resent additions that Saab has done include a new paint shop, new press line, and an extension to the body shop all within the last few years (Saab Expands Assembly Plant).

Saab has always been an environmentally conscience car company. As of last November though Saab has been recognized as the one and only car company in the world to be certified with the ISO 14001 environmental management system. Environmental impact is has always been one of Saabs more important considerations, which now is even more evident then ever (Environmentally Certified Development).

Over the years Saab has produced many different models of cars. One of the latest models is the Saab 900. The Saab 900 was first produced in 1978. It was by far the most successful car that Saab has ever built.

In 1993 the body style and many of the components were changed in the 900. Production of the new 900 continued till 1997. The Saab 900 was the most produced car that Saab has ever built. They sold well over 1 billion Saab 900’s between 1978 and 1997 (Saab Short Facts). In 1999 the Saab 900 was named the safest car on the road among all 4-door mid-size cars by the US Highway Loss Data Institute.

The Saab 900 had the lowest injury claim rate and scored %39 better then the average 4 door mid size car (Saab Tops 4-door Mid-Size in HLDI Study).

The Saab 9000 was first introduced in 1984 and entered production in late 1985.

In 1992 an air test was performed on a Saab 9000 in London England. They tested the air going into the car as well as the air coming out of the exhaust pipe. The air coming out of the exhaust pipe was actually cleaner then the air going in (Dymock, Eric 102). Production ended for the Saab 9000 in 1998 (Saab Short Facts).

The Saab 9-5 is the new high end model. The Saab 9-5 entered production in 1997 to replace the old 9000’s. It comes in a sedan or wagon option. Also available is either a 170hp, 200hp, or 230hp engine. Almost everything comes standard on the 9-5. Some of the options available are heated front and rear seats and ventilated leather upholstery (Saab booklet 47). There is also an option for automatic transmission, metallic paint, and wheel upgrade. The new 2001 Saab 9-5 rages in price from base model at $33,995 to the fully loaded Aero Wagon for $47,705 (2001 Saab Model Price Listing). In a resent AAA evaluation the new 2001 Saab 9-5 won the top honor in the $30,000 to $35,000 class (Saab 9-5 wagon named “top car” for 2001 by AAA). The Saab 9-5 was also named to the top three by J. D. Power and Associates. It was named top three in the Luxury category for new cars that would be most appealing for new customers based on satisfaction of powertrain, exterior, and interior design (9-5 in Top Three of Appeal Study).

The Saab 9-3 s the smaller and more sportier option. The 9-3 also entered production in 1997 to replace the 900. It comes in either a coupe, 5 door, or the convertible. It to has the option of either a 185hp or a 205hp engine. The 9-3 just like its big brother the 9-5, comes with many standard features. Some of options available are the heated seats, automatic transmission, power sunroof, leather, metallic paint, and for the convertible a premium package (Saab booklet 33). Base price for a new 2001 9-3 start at $26,495 and go up to $37,140 with all the extras. The 9-3 in its convertible option starts at about $39,995 and goes up to $43,535 (2001 Saab Model Price Listing).
The Saab Viggen is the ultimate sports car for Saab. The name “Viggen” in Swedish means thunderbolt. It is also named after the Swedish military Saab fighter jet the “Viggen.” The Viggen is a race model of the 9-3 available in both a coupe and convertible. Under the hood (or bonnet, as often referred to in the European lingo) it comes with a high output turbocharged 230hp 2.3 liter DOHC 16 valve four cylinder engine. The engine puts out an amazing 258lbs of torque @ 2500rpm. This is very rare for a four cylinder engine (Wilson, Greg).

The Viggen’s powerful turbo puts out and amazing 20psi. of boost pressure. Compared to the 2001 twin turboed Porsche 911 that only puts out 12.32 max. psi. (Wilson, Kevin A. 20-21). The Viggen is also about %12 more efficient at producing horse power then the Porsche 911. Better yet the Viggen also is %52 more efficient at producing torque then the Porsche 911. Which means even though the Porsche engine is much bigger the Saab’s, it’s not all that far ahead because of its insufficiency (9-3 Viggen Performance). In the US only 400 Viggens were sold in 1999 and in 2000 there will only be 1,000 sold here (9-3 Viggen Flight Academy Clears Owners for Takeoff). A new 2001 Viggen ranges in price starting at $37,995 and up to $39,990. The Viggen also comes in a convertible option starting at $44,995 and peaking out at 47,335 (2001 Saab Model Price Listing).

For every new Viggen purchase or leased comes a free trip to Atlanta Georgia to participate in the Viggen Fight Academy program. This high-performance driving school located at the Georgia’s Road Atlantic race track. Here new Viggen owners can get top notch training from some of the best driving professionals. The course consists of %80 road driving and %20 classroom work. Some of the safety that is taught there is on controlling skids and weight transfer. The teacher to student ratio is a wonderful one-to-four. The academy lasts two full days and is offered throughout the year. This program is free but is only offered to new Saab Viggen owners (Saab Discoveries Winter 2) (9-3 Viggen Flight Academy Clears Owners for Takeoff).

With the purchase of any new Saab, the customer gets the option of picking up there Saab in Sweden, right from the factory. This even includes two round trip airline tickets to Sweden, dinner, breakfast, and accommodations. With this package the customer gets to see where and how the Saab’s are being built with a tour of there factory and of the Saab museum. They also get to spend there European vacation touring in there new Saab. When the vacation is over, Saab handles all the customs and paperwork in order to send the new Saab to the US Flight back to the US can be made from several different cities, not just Stockholm Sweden. Those cities include Munich, Vienna, Paris, Madrid and London. The down side is that it takes approximately 8-12 weeks to ship the new Saab from Europe to the US There must also be a $1,000 deposit at the time of sale (European Delivery Program).

Saab has also been very active with space exploration. Saab has done equipment contracts for 16 satellites, 18 launch vehicles, and about 30 space probes. That also includes the building of the Viking satellite (Saab-Scania Story 160-161). Saab has done contract work for McDonnell Douglas as well. Saab built, and still does built wing flaps for the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 (The Saab-Scania Story 111). Just an example of some of the other things that Saab has built over the years include computers, missiles, submarines, tanks, hovercrafts, camping trailers, and even bicycles.
Saab is the first car company to offer a full line of pet accessories for your new Saab. A resent survey showed that over %60 of Saab owners have a pet. So Saab designed a hole live of Saab pet gear. This line of gear is even approved by the Humane Society of the United States. This gear offers a much higher level of safety for not only your pet but for the driver as well (Saab and Humane Society of the United States Promote Pet Safety).
Saab has many new and exciting features coming out every year. One new standard feature on the all new Saabs with automatic transmissions is the winter mode button. This small snowflake button located on the shifter is used whenever driving in snow or icy conditions. By pressing this button the car while starting from a stop will be in 3rd gear. This will help prevent excessive spinning of the tires and a potentially dangerous situation. The winter mode automatically disengages after the car reaches 50mph or you turn off the engine ( Saab Discoveries Winter 3).
Another neat feature of new Saabs with the automatic transmission is the “S” or sport mode. When the sport mode is activated the transmission lets the rpm’s climb higher then normal before switching gears. Also with the sport mode the throttle angle is significantly altered to allow considerable more power at the same throttle stetting ( Saab Discoveries Winter 3).
The side mirrors on all new Saabs aside from being power and auto defrosted, they also come with a great backing feature. When ever you need to back up into a parking spot that is right next to a curb, all you need to do is push a button. The right side mirror moves down so you can see and align your back tires with the curb. So there is no more asking your passenger, “Am I close enough to the curb” (Nevinczenko, Sheila J.). Another great feature of new Saabs is the right side mirror is also a wide angle mirror. It allows for %30 more visibility over conventional convex mirrors. Saab is the only car company in the US to offer the wide angle side mirrors (Split Wide-Angle Mirror Gives Safer Field of View).
The glove box on new Saabs is also refrigerated. There is a switch that can turn this function on and off. When it is on, the glove box becomes a mini frige at about 42 degrees Fahrenheit. This can be very handy on hot days to keep your soda cold or keep your candy bar from melting (Saab 9-5 Cool for Hot Times).
All Saabs also come with a cabin air filter to filter all the incoming air from the A/C or the heater. Saab was the first car manufacture to offer a cabin air filter in 1978. Today every Saab comes with an air filter that can filter small dust particles and pollen down to .004mm. Saabs also have a second air filter that is charcoal, it is used to help purify the air (Saab 9-5 Cool for Hot Times). This can be very helpful for people with medical conditions such as asthma.
Saab was first in many new discoveries. Saab was the first car company to offer full time running lights in 1969. In 1971 Saab was the first to offer headlamp washers. Which was not only a wonderful safety feature but later became required by law in Sweden. Saab even was the first car company to invent halogen headlamps in 1972. Saab also pioneered the electronic heated seats, and just recently Saab was the first car company to have ventilated seats, for those really hot humid days. (Saab 9-5 Cool for Hot Times). They were the first car company to ever produce a turbo charged engine in 1977 (The Saab-Scania Story 79&103) (Dymock, Eric 16-17). One very wonderful feature that I really love, is the Saab heater traps warm air inside of it overnight. Then during the night it slowly lets out the warm air threw the defrost vents on the dash. So on cold morning when you go out side to your frost covered Saab there will be large melted spots on the windshield where the frost has already melted (Dymock, Eric 103). Saab was also the inverter of the ejection seat, and was the first aircraft manufacture to ever build an airplane with one (The Saab-Scania Story 26). Safety was always one of the biggest concerns for Saab. From day one till today, Saab still stresses safety and the importance of a safe car.
Saab is by far one of the most safest cars on the road. Available on all 2000 models is the new OnStar system. OnStar is a nation wide company that provides 24 hour, real life advisors. At any time while driving all that must be done is press one button. You are instantly connected to a real life OnStar advisor. From there you can do anything from e-mail and stock quotes to directions and restaurant reservations. You can also make personal hands free phone calls using OnStar. OnStar can also be used in emergencies. It can be used to call and report an accident or even if you have a flat tire. Not only will it help you when your lost or in an emergence but OnStar will automatically be called if the airbags in your car are ever deployed. So even if ran off some urban road and knocked unconscious, OnStar will send help to you. This system works with the aid of GPS. So if your car is ever stolen you could call OnStar and they could locate your car anywhere in the world. As of 2000 Saab is the only European car company to offer this high of a level of advanced voice-activated telematics services in its vehicles (Saab Discoveries Fall 1) (Guardian Angel 11-13). In a resent real world experience a guy in Framingham Massachusetts grabbed the keys to a new Saab 9-5 and stole it right of the dealers lot. The new Saab however comes standardly equipped with OnStar, so all that had to be done was make a phone call to OnStar and a call to the police. The police where then able to track the car and easily bring the thief to justice (Saab Discoveries Spring 3).
Saab is recognized world wide for its amazing safety features. In 1972 Saab was the first car manufacturer to install side-impact door beams (Saab booklet 18). Today Saab is the only car manufacture in the world to have an “active head restraint system.” It is the first active protection in the world to help prevent whiplash injuries. It works by instantly moving the heard rest upward and forward in the event of a crash to help support the neck and head. In the recent EuroNCAP collision tests the Saab 9-5 came in top in its class. The Saab 9-5 outperformed such competitors as the Volvo S70, BMW 5 series, Mercedes Benz E-class, and the Audi A6 (9-5 in crash test). This last year was the first year that side collision tests were done in the competition. The Saab 9-5 and the 9-3 were awarded the highest marks in the new test (Wilcock, Richard 40-43).
As a result of the great safety of Saabs, State Farm Insurance company is now offering a %40 discount for all 2001 Saabs. State Farm was very impressed with the real-world crash safety rather then just a good score in crash tests. Saab is the only car company that receives this special safety discount. These rates do very from state to state though. The car insurance is also cheaper because of the OnStar’s theft recovery system (2001 Saabs Rate A from State Farm Insurance Discounts).
In a recent durability test Saab took six factory-fresh Saab 900’s and took them to a race track in Atlanta. They were then raced all out for 25,000 miles. At the end of the eight day race the Saab’s set 40 international speed records and one continuous at an average speed of 140.709 mph. Halfway though the race there was a server thunderstorm and a strong gust of wind pushed one of the Saabs head first into a concrete wall. The car was traveling at well over 80 mph when it hit the wall. Both airbags deployed and the driver emerged from the car without even a scratch. The driver Herman Rundstrom returned to race later that day. The car was still in good shape. None of the glass was broken and both doors still open and closed perfectly. The damaged car was showcased and shown at a safety seminar later that day (Saab’s latest real world safety test was unscheduled).
As far as anti-theft Saab excels tremendously. Saab has what it calls the three stage anti theft system. First of all the lock cylinders can’t be pride out of the doors or trunk. Also if the anything but the correct key tries to turn the locked cylinders they will just rotate uselessly. If a thief tries breaking a window to get in an alarm is sounded and the car will automatically not open from the inside. The Saab audio system is also coded so that it will not work on any other car, even another Saab. There is also an electronic immobilizer that will not let the car start unless the correct laser cut key is used. The key also has to match the code in the immobilizes logic. On top of that the code changes every time you start your car, and there is over four billion code combinations. Finally Saab is the only car company that has the ignition located between the two seats. This is so the key locks the transmission instead of the steering column. Not only is the transmission much harder to unlock then the steering column but it is also much safer if your car ever died while going down the highway. You wouldn’t have the steering locking up on you while your going 75mph (Saab Discoveries Fall 3).
Saab recently decided to enter a car in the annual Pikes Peak Hill Climb. This race is held every year on the 4th of July sense 1916. It is the 2nd oldest race in the United States. Saab entered a modified 9-3 Viggen driven by European rallycross champion Per Eklund. This race is one of the toughest races because of the extreme altitude. The race starts at 9,402 feet and ends at the top of Pikes Peak at an elevation of 14,110 feet. Saab developed a specially adapted engine that delivered more then 750 hp at 8,000 rpm, which is a phenomenal amount of power considering it was only a 4 cylinder 16 valve engine with only 2.0 liters of displacement. This specially tuned Viggen was equipped with a Garrett turbocharger that produced 42.8 psi. This car is extremely fast and can do 0 to 60 mph in only 2.3 seconds. It also puts out 518 lb. of torque at 6,500 rpm. This Viggen was also equipped with 4 wheel drive and a 6 speed prodrive gearbox. In the end Per Eklund and his Viggen won first place in the 78th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. They also set a new open record of 11:21.58 (King of the Hill 45-47).
Not only does Saab win car races but last summer in Sydney at the Summer Games the Saab sponsored team Gary Fisher won the gold medal. Paola Pezzo of Italy won the women’s gold in the cross-country mountain biking race (Olympic Gold 5).
Last December Saab was the first across the finish line at the Michelin Race of Champions. The race consisted of eight national teams. In the end Tommy Makinen won with a 600hp Saab 9-3. The race was held in Spain’s Canary Islands (Saab Discoveries Spring 2).
For spring break 1998 Saab took the ultimate road trip. Saab used two 9-3’s together with six drivers and took a grueling long distance road trip. The two cars started in northern Alaska, well within the arctic circle. They started March 16, driving south through Alaska and down through the Yukon Territory in Canada. The treck continued twenty four hours a day, non stop for the next four days strait. By the end of the fourth day they had crosses the hole continent covering almost 5,800 miles in 96 hours and 23 minutes. The team encountered every weather condition, from snow and blizzards, to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. While driving though Calgary Canada the team drove though the worst snow storm that the area had seen in 113 years. Temperatures raged from 42 below zero to a warm 83 at there destination of Key West Florida. They only stopped for fuel and never went over the speed limit. The Saabs handled beautifully through the entire trip. Even in the snow and ice, and going through deep mud they didn’t get stuck at all. In the mountains the turbo charged engines performed wonderful, providing extra power and great acceleration (Saab Conquers the Continent).
Saab dealers are raked #1 for using actual parts directly from the manufacture. Out of every dealership in the US Saab dealerships use %97.4 Saab parts that are ordered right from the manufacture. This is done mainly because of price, availability, and delivery speed. Saab Dealerships through out the country can send parts overnight so that any car can be fixed in 24 hours or less. This is turn is great for customer service and will make Saab owners more likely to come to the dealership instead of going to some other garage (Dealers #1 in use of Genuine OEM Parts).
Saabs are some of the most reliable cars out there. It is not uncommon to find Saabs with well over 200,000 to 300,000 miles. I located just under 50 Saabs in the US that subscribe to saabnet.com that had over 300,000 miles and toped out at 550,000 miles on there Saabs (TSN High mileage Saabs).
In my opinion Saab is the best all around car for the state of Colorado. In my mind there is no other car that even competes with Saab in Colorado. First Saabs being engineered and built in Sweden gives them a great advantage. The climate and mountainous tertian in Sweden is very similar to the features here in Colorado. Saab engines are very small which gives them very good gas mileage. Even though it has a small engine it is still very powerful. The turbocharger on a Saab also gives it a great advantage at high altitude and going over mountain passes. Nothing will pass a Saab going up mountain. All Saabs are also front wheel drive. Giving them great control on snow and icy roads. If you were to drive up to Vail or Aspen you would see something very interesting. The Vail and Aspen police departments all drive Saabs. They know what performs the best and what can handle the harsh Colorado climate. Saab is also the official car of Mt. Crested Butte. On top of everything Saab is one of the safest cars on the road today. Making Saab a great car for almost any driving style, including young drivers and drivers with families.
