calcification on battery terminals = one-time no start?

Went out for the evening in my 1990 SPG and upon returning to the garage, sent my girlfriend up to start the car while I paid the cashier. When I got upstairs she was sitting in the front seat, saying she had to keep the car in gear to keep it from stalling out. (Don't ask me, she still hasn't explained what she meant). When she got out of the drivers seat the car stalled out and when I went to restart it, showed all the symptoms of a drained battery. I couldn't figure it out, I replaced the battery, alternator and belts last February. I looked under the hood and saw lots of whitish corrosion on the terminals of the battery; I thought about cleaning it off but realized I didn't have anything to do it with. So I put in a call to AAA for a jump start -- they came by, jumped the car, ran with no problems (got me about 20 miles to my house). So my question is, is this stuff on the terminals the likely culprit, or do I have something else to worry about?
And on an interesting note, a fellow in a gorgeous lightning blue Viggen drove by and offered help (no jumper cables though), commented on my SPG and offered to call AAA. We had a nice chat about high-powered Saabs. :)
