but John's problem could be something in the gearbox other than the pinion bearings. Bearing failures on the countergear will make a lot of noise in all gears except fifth. Not likely on a M90 gearbox, if that's what it is, but possible. I've seen lower input sprocket bearings fail with a lot of noise including stationary at idle due to corrosion on the bearings. Looked like a case of a trans that got water in it during storage at a wrecker or something.
