I worked for a global battery manufacturer for 4 years. Heres some things to keep in mind when dealing with batteries.
Never use the car to charge a discharged battery. It will kill your alternator. (heat)
The higher the CCA ratings the lower the reserve capacity (More lead equals less room for electrolite(acid) which makes for an unequal ratio of lead to acid which kills reserve rating and life span).
Car manufacturers publish CCA specs for models of their cars based on options. (engine size, compression, electrical...)I would always suggest moving up at least 150 CCAs.
Always buy based on CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) not CA (Cranking Amps) CCA is based on the amount amps a battery can supply for a specified period of time w/o dropping below a specific voltage at 0 Degrees while CA is measured at 32 degrees (the same as a marine battery MCA)
I would normally recomend moving to a 72-month or higher in warranty months because it means longer warranty period, with more lead content. The cheaper the battery, the less lead, the lower the warranty period.
*****THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT******
ALWAYS ASK THE PERSON AT THE STORE WHERE YOU ARE BUYING THE BATTERY TO SHOW YOU THE MANUFACTURE DATE OF THE BATTERY. THIS IS NORMALLY HOT- STAMPED SOMEWHERE IN THE CASE. (STICKERS WITH DATES ARE USUALLY SHIPPING CODES NOT MANUFACTURE CODES.) IF THE BATTERY IS MORE THAN 4-6 MONTHS OLD YOU DONT WANT IT.
I would suggest Exide, Interstate(Johnson Controls), or Delco. Those are the biggest manufacturers. You get what you pay for with batteries, always.
(Yes I did work for one of those companies as a Sales Manager.)
