Gordo, Pursang, all:
Thanks for the good advice. I'll record Sobstory's phone number in the car's manual.
I've gotten into this thing and now I'm not sure I have to replace the inner carriers. There is a worn spot in each of the "rails" but it isn't deep. The bearings seem to be good also (except one...later). I read in some of the archives about swapping sides on these to get "new" wear surfaces, but with the warning about removing them both. Can I remove both if I block the first side with a dowel turned to the ID of the splines?
I did find that the ball bearing that came out with the bearing carrier is *completely* worn out. I've never before seen a ball bearing with over 1mm radial play!!! I took this apart in the first place because there was a rythmic knocking noise coming from the passenger's side. I had seen some wear when I rebuilt the transmission three years ago. The knocking frequency was related to road speed, so I figured that the tripod joint had just finally worn out. Well, when I connect it up and twist on the carrier and the shaft, there is very little lost motion. However, the outer (CV) joint has detectable play when twisted. But, it isn't great, not over .020 on the diameter. How much is acceptable?
I'm thinking of replacing the bearing and seal (above) and swapping the tripod cups. There isn't that much labor, even if I have to go in there again a year on down the road. Also, is there any benefit to swapping the outer CV joints side-for-side to get new wear surfaces on them working?
What think??
Cheers/Don
