Okay, my dad and I just purchased a 1991 900S hatchback, 5 speed, with 115k miles very inexpensively.
We don't have it home yet (still need to register, insure, etc.). There are a few things that we have to work out, among which are:
1. E-brake. It doesn't work at all. When you pull the lever up, there's absolutely no resistance--we're thinking that the cable isn't connected to the lever anymore. Any thoughts on this?
2. Brakes. The brakes work fine, but the pedal is very stiff. Is this due to the ABS? This is our first ABS car (yeehaw.. into the 90's..) and compared to my and my father's 89 and 87 900S's, we both thought the pedal is tight. Is this normal? Also, the brakes squeeked every once and a while during our 15 mile test drive--the car's been sitting for two months, should we just assume that this will go away? It stops both when you put very light pressure on the pedal and when you get up above 40 mph.
3. Cruise control. The light on the dash comes on, but there's no hint at it working--I've been told about ground wires and looking for vacuum leaks. Any more hints or ideas? The more I get, the better equipped I'll be to tackle this.
4. We think that there might be a little valve lifter chatter--my dad informs me that these are adjustable. Does anyone have any words of wisdom on this?
5. The clutch lets out right at the bottom--almost at the end of the throw of the pedal. It doesn't slip, though, so we weren't worried--should we have been? Is the engagment spot of the clutch adjustable?
6. Scratches. The car has a bunch. Most are not deep--they should be very easily fixed. Should we try to buff them out and if so, how? Should we take the car to a professional and let them have at it? There are a few that will require some touch-up paint--anyone have good experience with doing this to make it blend in well? The car's gray, so hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to make the touch-up paint integrate well into the original coat. Help with the paint would be very much appreciated.
7. The car needs a bunch of little things. Where can we find horn buttons (for a steering wheel with an airbag) and new foglight lenses (they're cracked)? Also, we need the wiper blades for the headlight wipers--anyone know where to find these? We know of a good parts yard.. I assume that each of these things is fine to get used...
8. We have the option to get the car with or without the stereo, amp, and extra pair of speakers that the owner has installed--it's an Alpine CD player (new last summer--I can't remember the numbers), an Alpine MRV-F307 amplifier, and Boston Acoustics speakers. If we take them, it's $500. Is this worth it? The owner said it was a $1000 system. We figure that we would probably take this stuff out anyway and try to sell it--should we bother or just save ourselves the $500? It seems like its always easier to buy than to sell...
All in all, it's a good car--just not a creampuff. It accelerates smoothly, runs well, is quiet, and has no rust! There are a few scratches, but all should be easily fixed.
