you should remove the seat

I removed the seat and brought it in the house to work on. You would have a very hard time trying to remove it with the seat still in the car. The seat is easy to remove. If older, like my '87 spg, there are only two allen bolts at the front. THe 87 9000t had 4 torx bolts, one at each corner. ONce you get the seat out you can turn it upside down and from there it's very easy to see how to get the cover off. You have to remove the plastic cover on the side of the seat to unhook the cover.
