I'll try to answer a few of your questions at least. Have done this a few times but certainly know what its like when the wife says "get rid of that thing!!!" You should hear about my weekend....

Anyway, did you put something under the upper A-arm before you took the wheels off, so the A-arm does not drop all the way down? Does this make sense? If you use a jack and jack under the lower ball joint, it will raise up the complete hub and allow you to (carefully) slip something about the size of some brake pads (there is a nice Saab tool too) under the UPPER A-arm where it comes out of the body to support it. This take the pressure off the LOWER A-arm so that you can separate it from the ball joint. That is the part that I hate the most, and here in MI we are always dealing with rust issues there too. I once had to drill an entire length of one of those bolts to get it out, after breaking the shock mount from hitting the bolt so hard.

Then you should be able to pivot the hub assy upwards once the ball joint bolts are out. This will pull the axle out away from the inner drivers (make sure you opened up the clips on the inner boots!) and you can pull the tripods out. Do both sides... save you lots of struggling with the engine on removal. How do I know this??? : )

After you get the engine out, doing the outer CV boot (which you said was bad from what I can tell) is not that hard. First get some CV boots (good ones... its not THAT fun a job that you want to do it annually, like I have) and some good CV joint grease, some Q-tips and preferably some expanding circlip pliers (I think that is the name) that you use to expand the internal clip inside the CV joint. Then drop me an email at lamanjim@juno.com and I can walk you through it. Its not that hard, and I have done several of them.

You'll get there... I have one in the works at the moment too. It never ends!

Jim
