Failure of the clutch to disengage fully can cause your problems. This is caused by a combination of an elongated hole in the clutch pedal where it engages the clevice on the master cylinder, or a weak master and/or slave cylinder.

The problem could also be a bad clutch shaft bearing, particularly if it usually grinds going into reverse. It resides in the center of the flywheel and supports the clutch shaft. If the bearing is bad, the transmission innards can't turn independent of the engine when the clutch is disengaged and it won't shift properly.

If the gearshift seems to move in your hand when you go over bumps or accelerate/slow, an engine mount could be bad. It's usually either the front mount or the right mount (by the exhaust).

It could also just be a matter of misadjustment of the shift rod. There's a clamp that secures the shaft coming from the engine to the shaft coming from the car. The Bentley manual has details on how to make the adjustment. It requires an alignment tool.

If you get any whine out of the transmission, particularly in 3/4/5 above about 30 mph when under load, then you may have more serious problems. The whine usually comes from the pinion bearing. As the bearing starts to fail, slop develops in the system and shifting gets hard. If you let it go, the end is catastrophic failure and lottzbucks.
