I had the same thing happen to my '84 900:

Your problem might be that the relay for the cooling fans (located on left inner fender behind left headlight) has gone bad. It turns on the fans when the coolant temperature switch screwed into left side of radiator senses the radiator is hot. It also keeps power available to the fans even after the ignition is switched off, for up to 10 minutes or so.

Townsend of Townsend Imports told me they fail in one of two ways:
1. Relay fails w/circuit "open." That is, the relay is a break in the circuit and power never goes to the fans. OR...

2. Relay fails and sticks "closed." That means the fans run all the time, even after car is shut off, until battery is dead.

Either your radiator temp. switch is bad, or that relay, or fan motors, but the latter is unlikely.

To see if fans are operational, peel back the rubber connector on the two wires at the radiator temp. switch and short across the wires with a screwdriver--ignition on. If the fans come on, then you know they are good.

To test temp. switch, start car and warm it up until dash temp guage shows the 2/3 mark. Have an ohmeter ready and disconnect the wires from the radiator temp swich. Connect leads of ohmmeter across the terminals on the radiator switch. Should read 0 ohms or very low ohms, if switch is good.

If so, the problem is definitely the relay.

Townsend told me he bypasses the relays regularly, as they fail at very inopportune times and the radiator switch can handle the job of switching power to the fans anyway.

To do this, he takes the wire harness going to the relay, cuts each wire off from plug--do this w/negative battery cable disconnected!--and then strips back some of the insulation on ONLY the two yellow wires and twists the two yellow wires together. The rest of the wires, he isolates away with electrical tape, not connecting them to anything. Then, he tucks all the wires back up inside the wire harness housing and wraps that up with several turns of electrical tape and even applies a heat shrink tube to keep out water & dirt. Hope this helps!
