Recentley I installed some gauges in my '89 Turbo and used the light over the ashtray as a power source. Everything was great until someone else drove the car and started playing with all the knobs in the car. Well after taking everything apart to figure out why the lights in the gauges where all dim and the volt gauge read 8 volts I relized that this someone had dimmed the lights using the dash reostat.
Fix: Found a good source that was was controled by the ign, ran a new line from the battery (with in line fuse) and placed a relay in the circuit.
Now everything works great.
I hope this helps.
