Thanks for your help, Chris. I may have found the problem, but since I know I didn't do this, I'm worried about undoing it. (I had an older gentleman who used to run a shop (all American, though) over helping me, and he may have done this inadvertently.
The positive cable has two pieces. One goes up to a black connector box high on the side wall of the engine compartment. The other length appears from the wiring diagram on p. 371-84 of the Bentley manual to be meant for the starter, but in fact it is bolted to the body of the car down just behind the radiator, in one of the holes with the bolt that holds on one of the skid bars. However, the starter already has three wires going to it, which is all the manual shows, one of which is a pretty good sized white one, which I would have thought carried the current to start the motor.
However, this wiring diagram is for an 85 turbo, the first year Bentley covers, and my car is an 84 turbo.
So I guess I feel pretty comfortable that the positive cable is in the wrong place, but I'm not so sure where to put it. My other Saab is a 92 convertible, and it does have the positive cable running to the starter, but as the starter is on the other side of the engine, my confidence is shaken that it is wired the same way.
