After noticing even some exp. mechs' do not aware of how to properly measure Coolant Buoyancy, I ran experiment today in my small lab. Result showed that 50:50 M-B Coolant's density is 1.100 at -4 C (25 F), 1.070 g/ml at 20 C (68 F),1.060 at 30 C (86 F), 1.050 at 70 C (158 F). Coolant became obviosly viscous at -30 C (-22 F), highly viscous at -37 C (-35 F), slurry at -40 C (-40 F), and formed sherbet at -50 C (-58 F). So, at this concentration, it will well protect from freezing down to -37 C (-35 F). However, be aware everybody! This is the shot! If we adjust the density after thermo opens (82 or 89 C) when density is higher than normal, the Coolant is too dense/viscous at operating temperature. AND, my cheap plastic Coolant Tester was very inaccurate, meaning while it says that when four balls float (perhaps at room temp), it is good for -35 F protection -- However this in fact brings in overly high density/viscosity at operating temperature. This likely should cause premature break down of water pump, thermostat, valves, etc. It is not a easy job to flush all coolnant in Saab and if we want to adjust the denstiy by adding 100% Coolant ..... you know what I mean .... Just make sure measuring and adjust at room temperature.
