Well, I wouldn't call them grooves, really. Not tight ones, anyway. There is a little raised area on the left side of the plastic piece. When you look at it or run your finger through all that grease, you can easily see and feel how the pin would have to come up to allow the lever to go over far enough to put the car in reverse.
I don't know why you would not have any reverse lockout. The thing seems pretty tough to me; it's hard to see how it could get broken in normal use. I wonder if your pin is stuck in the up position, or if it has come out of adjustment?
