Alternator troubleshooting Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: The Battery Light, FGP, Thu, 7 Feb 2002 13:36:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I would start with the voltage regulator, and if that didn't pan out, go for the alternator.
The voltage regulator is bolted to the back of the alternator, held on with two bolts. VERY easy to get to in the 900. Some autoparts stores stock them (I've found them hard to find) - I've had excellent luck with Sobstory. Remove the ground wire from the battery, unbolt the old regulator, and bolt in the new one.
There are two common problems with the regulator, and both of them can show up as having the light on dim, going away either with time or if you hit enough revs. In one case it's a problem internal to the regulator; in the other, it's just that the brushes are worn down too far. The brushes are part of the regulator; replace the regulator, and you get new brushes. It is possible to replace the brushes by unsoldering the old ones and soldering in new ones, but I wouldn't bother - just replace the alternator.
If that doesn't fix it, then it may be an alternator problem. But do the easy stuff first.
If you're really ambitious and have access to an oscilloscope, try this link for alternator troubleshooting:

But the most probable problem is the voltage regulator.
