My Nu2Me '88 SPG (175K) failed the MD ST Emission test twice with high NOx after previously passing with the PO the year before. Before the first test, the car was tuned, new plugs, wires, timing correct, fuel filter, new oil and air filters, all vacuum lines and intake nipples and bushings were checked and replaced, the AMM and AIC were swapped out with known good ones.
After the first test I found a dis-connected heater wire to the OXY Sensor, which I thought was the problem, and wound up replacing the entire O2 sensor completely, but the car failed again after doing that. Luckily, I had put over $200 in parts in it and got a waiver but I'll be faced with the same problem next year. I'll probably wind up replacing the catalytic converter. I was waiting to do that last, as that was the most expensive part to replace.
Some recommended “cheater” methods included, running the car hard before the test, run a can of Tech-Ro-Lene (sp?) thru the tank and/or retard the timing to 13 degrees before the test. I did the first two suggestion to no avail.
