What does stretched timing chain feel like?

Anyone know the symptoms to this? I have a 85 900T with 230K on it. It feels like the car is moving timing at speed, kind of surges, not engine revs, but power, like a brake is dragging, then not.
I'm thinking either something with chain (no idea when replaced last, I did new style tensioner 2 years ago) or perhaps the clutch is going?
Hmmmm, very wierd!
Thanks for any guru insight,
Ross
