I read a post here on Thursday about frame rust out where the A frame assembly bolts up to the front sub frame. I live in Massachusetts, so I thought I would check mine out because I have spent a lot of time this winter on icy, snowy, salty and sandy roads in Vermont and Quebec (skiing).

I usually do an undercarriage and/or underhood inspection and cleaning once or twice a year. But given the posting I read on Thursday, I decided to have a look under my 90 900 S now, rather than wait for spring. Fortunately, weather cooperated today, with temps going up to almost 50 degrees.

Upon inspection from above and underneath, my frame is fine, BUT there was a large build up of battery acid, salt, grit and grime on the frame rail. Much of this is only visible from underneath the car under where the exhaust pipes are routed. I used cleaning brushes to get much of the white, powdery, gooky buildup off from above and below. Then I hosed it down using high pressure. All clean now.

This is the frame rail that is visible from above with the hood open looking in on the side of the engine compartment where the battery resides (left, or passengers side on US spec car). You also need to have a look from underneath the car where the A frame attaches. The other side (right side) was not nearly as yucky as the left side.

If you have not had a close look at your front sub frame rails, from above and below the car, you should have a look soon, perform maintenance and avoid a rust out. Better yet, make the cleaning of these areas part of your annual maintenance plans.
