A million apologies to the kind gurus who have taken the time to respond to my (desperate) cry for help.
I drove the car after work (i.e., after leaving my message) and actually turned off the radio (which I have left on lately to avoid hearing the sound of future car repair bills).
My apologies are... because I now realize that the sound occurs when I take my foot OFF the gas. And it goes away when I press on the accelerator. I knew that it was tied into that pedal somehow... but the sound actually occurs only when the car is coasting (and not the other way around as I originally thought). Oh, and the sound doesn't really very in tone or intensity... but it does seem to be occurring more frequently than before (as in, almost any time the car is coasting). Also it doesn't go away once the car has warmed up-- there doesn't seem to be any real difference the longer I am driving (I just get more used to it).
Now in light of this major revision to the story... Any thoughts now?
Thanks,
Andra
