Someone suggested throwing an extra detent ball in yesterday. I didn't think much good of it at the time but... It almost sounds as if your selector shaft may be worn such that there is a groove formed between the ridges that the detent ball rests in letting is just ease out of third into neutral. Applying more pressure to the ball either with another ball, or just a suitable spacer would test the theory. Also if your eyes are good you may be able to see wear on the selector shaft. You should also be able to see if the fork is bent.
The shifter feel won't be very nice with the extra pressure (I almost put a trans tegether the other day with an extra ball-I felt like Vladimir) but it may provide temporary relief while you save for an overhaul. Pulling the side cover will give you other valuable info as well.
