Ughh for the love of god, spring compressors....

Kill me now. I rented a set of spring compressors from autozone...they compress from the outside, with two cast ends and a long threaded rod. First I tried the rear... no acceptable place to put them because they are so long. Ok, maybe the front is better... yes lots of room! I put one on, and start cranking away. I can't put a socket on it because the nut is right against the spring, so I wrench, and I wrench, and I wrench till I'm blue in the face. I decide to put the other one on, but can't do it on the opposite side because there's too much obstruction on the inside. So I try to put it as far away from the other as possible. I keep compressing, thinking I might see the bottom lift but no luck. Mother$@#$&* that's as much as the compressors will go! At that point it was time for me to give it up for the day... but I had to get them off, so about 8000 turns of the wrench later, everything is back to the way it was before. I think I'll be getting my mechanic to put these on instead, I'll gladly pay after that fiasco. If I try this again, anybody have any helpful tips? Thanks in advance!
