Your symptoms point to a bad master cylinder. It is likely that you have a leaking seal(s) or a pitted cylinder bore. A rebuild kit might fix the problem temporarily, but if you have any bore corrosion, the seals will tear shortly. Therefore, get a new/rebuilt master cylinder. Then completely replace the fluid with new, if you did not before.
I do not think the wheel sequence is critical. But the diagonal recomendations are made because theoretically, you want to bleed an entire circuit at a time, hence right rear, left front or left rear, right front. On the non-ABS 900 in the family, I start at the right rear(farthest), then left front, then left rear, and finish with right front. I'll bet Haynes spec is UK, and was not translated to US. BTW, be sure to bleed each wheel until clean fluid comes out(about one pint per wheel).
