Positioning of thermostat

I did some preventative maintenance on my 91 900 NA (151k) last weekend. I replaced the upper radiator hoses and by-pass hose. Also, I replaced the cooling fans switch on the radiator and the thermostat. I got all parts from Sobstory. The thermostat is supposed to be the 82C (cool) version but I did not see any markings on the box or on the thermostat.
Before the switch, the car ran pretty cool on the Highway (about 1/3 in the green). Now it runs just below 1/2 in green. The engine probably will run better at this temperature but I know the head gasket is a weak link on these cars and I don't want to stress this part more than I need (gasket was replaced at 70k).
So my question is, did I get the wrong part or did I install it wrong. The new thermostat has an arrow on the top which points towards a little hole in the bottom plate. I remembered that they should point in a certain direction but could not find any info on this in the Bentley. So I pointed it upwards (basically towards the passenger side of the car). Any suggestions?
Thanks, Harold
