I love this site and have learned a great deal about my 2yo car, which is my first.
From reading through the archives, I think I've narrowed an oil leak down to the oil cooler hoses. They are pretty seepy but everything else looks ok (I cleaned the engine last Fall). This is a 1989 4 door Turbo with 145k. I've been reading Bentley and also thought I might want to check out and see whether the turbo oil supply pipes are clogged in anyway. But I can't really navigate too well. For one thing, my oil cooler is much larger than the one in the manual (yes, I know it's not drawn to scale). If I make hoses the way some have suggested in other posts, is there anything I have to do to first? What I'm wondering is, when I detach one end, is oil going to go all over the place for awhile or just until the hose is drained?
I see that the turbo is cooled by oil, and I guess the intercooler is cooling the exhaust gasses after it passes through the turbo but before it goes into the engine--is that right? And meanwhile, is the oil cooler cooling the oil before or after it passes through the turbo or is this something completely different? Obviously, I can't put all this together.
Can anybody explain, please?
thanks!
