I sure hope so... there's no way that's true. The ignition control unit on the fender generates the signal that both the tachometer and the fuel injection ECU use - there's a splice on the big 152 connector on the firewall. Remember that the tachometer is simply a display for an AC pulse generated by the ICU - it doesn't actually generate anything itself. The ECU reads that same AC pulse to determine injector cycles and knows full well when it's time to kill your fuel supply. Take a look at the wiring diagrams in the Bentley manual... it's pretty clear how the system works.
