Ventilation fan electrical issue

Strange happenings on the wife's '89 900T. About a month ago, it blew
the ventilation fan fuse. I replaced it. No problems until it blew
again this week. replaced it again.

Now the fan is blowing on high speed all the time. When the distribution
control is off, the fan is off. With it in position "1", the fan is on
full blast. In the other positions, the fan is on just slightly less
than full blast. So I think the distribution switch is working nomrally.

The fan speed control has no effect. In fact, even unplugged, it's the
same... fan on fast. The switch itself tests out fine.

I assume I have a melted down resistor pack. How does the resistor pack
come loose? I can unplug the connector from it, but I can't pop it out.
I'm working through the speaker opening and radio opening... am I going
to have to pull the dash to get better access to it?

Or am I on the wrong track?
