I have the type of compressor that looks like a puller with a spring in the middle (made by Lisle) and it works O.K. I have had it tip off and send parts flying, the main advantge is you can use it with the head installed. The best I have found for SAAB 8V heads (off the car) is a shop press. I took a deep socket and ground out a hole in the side big enough to get the keepers out or in using a machinist scribe. Place the head in the press with a rag or shop towel to hold the valve in place , put the "special tool" on the retainer, and pump the press till the keepers can be removed or installed as required.
You still need to use a hammer, BEFORE you try to take it apart, no matter what tool you use. Tap the edge of the retainer at an angle several times to break the bond between the keeper, retainer, valve stem, and spring. You will know when you have tapped enough when oil starts to come up between the retainer and keeper.
