Noisy Fuel Pump and bad acceleration

I have a 83 900S non-turbo 8V. Originally it had an automatic transmission but I changed out to a stick several years ago. Recently, I have noticed that the fuel pump is intermittently making more noise. Yesterday on the interstate, while accelerating, the car started to hesitate and chug. When I got off of the interstate, I noticed that when the fuel pump was noisy, the chugging and laboring to accelerate seemed to occur. When it sounded more normal (that faint whine from the rear deck) it accelerated fairly normally. Has anyone ever experienced a similar problem?

Thanks for any advice.
