A bumper tale.

As far as aesthetics on my recently painted 82, everything looked real nice with the exception of the front and rear bumpers, both of which had one too many run-ins with stuff over the years. The rear had lost the thin strip of aluminum running the length, and both were gouged and dented. At a scrap yard this past weekend I came upon a really nice 84 (less than 100,000 miles on the odometer) with bumpers that looked almost new compared with mine. $50 later and they were mine. The front mounted in the exact way for both cars. Never having removed the rear bumper on my car, I assumed the mounting was the same. Well, they're not. The main issue is that the 82 is mounted in a more secure way with additional bolted support in the center, plus each side uses longer bolts attached from within the bumper structure itself. I was nearly resigned to having to go back and remove the attachment brackets from the 84 - hoping they would attach to my 82! Who would have thought that within two years SAAB would redesign the rear bumper in a way where it was less secure! But then I thought perhaps there's a way to simply swap the bumper interiors so I didn't need the 84 attachment brackets. Disassembly was simple enough, and it turns out the interiors are indeed interchangable. Surprising how simple and flimsy the interior support structure is - not much more than plastic honeycomb. An expanding foam inside the honeycomb would add more support.
