I can't speak with any insight into the distributor and timing issues. What concerns me is that if your car has an APC system, then that smaller diameter vacuum hose should not be connected from the intake manifold to the valve cover. That hose should go from the top of the intake manifold over to the APC pressure transducer, located on the left front side of the engine compartment. If someone has moved all those vacuum hoses around, not knowing what they were doing, that's a likely reason why there's a major vacuum leak. Another possible leak is from one of the throttle body vacuum ports. Many 900's of that year have three - one for the distributor vacuum advance, one for the gas tank fumes charcoal filter, and the other for an EGR valve. If any of those ports have no hose connected to them, or the hoses aren't connected properly on either end, or the components they connect to are shot, you'll have a considerable vacuum leak. The EGR valve has a diaphragm which is prone to rupturing. You can just cap off any and all of those ports as a test.
The APC system has one very identifiable component - it's a three way port valve located atop the radiator housing just next to the ignition coil. It has three hoses going to different parts of the intake and turbo system. One of those hoses connects to the plastic intake duct running from the large black air intake rubber nozzle, and connects to the turbo. If that hose is disconnected, that's a major vacuum leak.
The bottom line here to your vac leak problem - all connections, vacuum hoses, gaskets, components or fasteners along the entire intake chain must be sound! It's that simple. Take it all apart one by one, check each component, replace or repair what's dead and reassemble securely.
