things...your experience seems somewhat limited...

Before I changed out the alternator I would remove the voltage regulator/brush carrier (they're combined on this alternator) and check the brushes. The brushes usually last for around 140K miles, but if this is the OEM alternator, 1989 may be old enough or, more likely, the voltage regulator has failed or one of the diodes in the diode bridge has shorted or opened.

Before you waste money on a new voltage regulator, it would help to have the alternator checked by a competent technician or purchase an inexpensive alternator/charging system tester yourself. Sun makes one (or did several years ago..I have one) for about $20 that you just clip one lead onto the alternator hot terminal and ground the other and look at the pattern of LEDs lit up on the little black box...it indicates low/high charging voltage and, more importantly for your case, defective/failed diodes.

The gentleman at the parts store should have been able to tell you whether the voltage regulator or diodes were bad.
