Gee...I really wasn't looking to get pilloried here. I have towed many cars with my Saab. The reason it failed was not due to overloading but because I screwed up on a recent rebuild and added too many shims behind the reverse gear which caused an improper meshing of the 4th gear and the cluster gear which caused a tooth to break and then bang!
Second how can a Turbocharger destroy itself due to towing? Many diesel engines run at full boost without wastegates for hundreds of thousands of miles without problems. Why do you think they use turbocharges on heavy trucks anyway? Because they are fragile?
Expensive? I am a Former Saab mechanic I am out $100 in parts and a days work. I have many spares.
