The dashpot looks like a little flying saucer with a pin sticking out, and it also has a spring around the pin. The dashpot has a bolt coming out the back and through a bracket. You adjust the dashpot by screwing it in and out of the bracket.
The idea of the dashpot is to catch the throttle arm as it closes, and *ease* it back to idle. The way I adjust the dashpot is to screw it in so that it doesn't touch the throttle arm. I then start the engine and make sure I have the right idle setting - if not adjust the idle stop screw. Then slowly screw the dashpot OUT until the pin compresses, then starts to move the arm off the idle stop. Turn the dashpot back a 1/4 turn. The idea is for the dashpot to control the throttle movement, but not be the idle stop.
THen open the throttle, and let it drop. The dashpot should catch the arm, and let it sink to the idle stop in about 3-5 seconds. No less than about 3 seconds. It's not a lot of movement, but it's there. If the arm just crashes down to the idle stop, then the dashpot is dead and needs to be replaced.
Good luck!
