I agree with John - more backpressure is bad for a turbo.
Think of it this way- the turbo operates on a pressure DIFFERENCE between the input of the turbo (engine exhaust) and the output of the turbo (through the muffler to the outside air).
The more backpressure there is means the pressure on the output side of the turbo is higher. If the muffler were blocked, there would be no pressure difference, and the turbo wouldn't spin.
I don't think flattening the pipe a little bit made any measureable increase in the backpressure. The backpressure is set by restrictions like the catalytic converter, resonator, and muffler. Changing the ID of a big, fat, pipe by a tiny bit is insignificant in comparison.
Gas mileage and performance numbers are very hard to repeat - different temperatures, different weather, different traffic, and how you're feeling that day. That's why clean cars run faster.
