I'm partial to taking off the knee bolster and replacing it from underneath. This allows you to check the condition of the heater core and clean the control valve mating surfaces on the heater core a little easier.
I just like to eyeball things directly when I'm working on them.
But if you have thin arms and some flex shafts for the hex key, going through the speaker opening may work for you.
