First of all push down on the top of the ignition to make sure it is seated completely. I am somewhat surprised the problem is intermittent. This happened on my son's 86 900S just last week. In his case he went to turn off the car and there was no resistance when he turned the key off. I got the car home by push starting it. I removed the lock cylinder and discovered the problem. The lock cylinder engages with two ears which are part of the gear that rotates the elctrical portion of the ignition switch. The two engagement ears were broken right off. The repair took me the better part of a day as it requires complete removal of the shift tower. Hopefully, you will find that the cylinder has just popped up a little so it is not fully engaged. If you can't resolve let me know and I will try to provide more detail if you decide to tackle it.
