The two heater hoses go into the firewall about there. The hose nipples are plastic, & they can break. Especially if somebody got carried away tightening the hose clamps.
The coolant reservoir is under pressure, & it can crack, too. Or maybe just the relief valve in the cap is stuck or dirty.
The water pump is around there, too. Pump shaft seals can leak, or any of the several hoses connected around/under the alternator.
The erratic temp. gauge could be caused by the cooling system not being full. The sensor for that is at the thermostat, air bubbles can collect there. Refill, & bleed air out of the brass nipple.
Hose it off real good (not while the engine is hot) & then try to locate the leak itself.
