A couple months ago, I ripped out all the guts of my 86 8v base(down to the frame and body) and started rebuilding. I had replaced the FI w/ LH 2.4.2, the engine w/ a 2.1L, and the interior w/ a leather one (welding in new seat brackets). Everything was replaced, and it came down to that final moment where all that needed to be installed was the battery. I sat the battery down and hooked up cables, I noticed these weird little sparks coming from the ground(I never saw those before). With the cables hooked up, it caught me, the battery was in backwards(Freakin A!!!). To do all that work and to have blown out the FI ECU or etc, I was having bad thoughts. Well, after a day of intensive diagnostic, and about three of thinking, I came back and found the jumper cable that goes from the sender area to the fuel pump had corrosion on the connectors. And from reninstallation they weren't getting contact. So I made my own jumper cable that went from the connector by the sender to the pump and problem was solved. The ordeal was very frustrating.
Moral of story, Check that the fuel pump is getting power!!!
