I'm assuming that you mean the control panel lights won't work(i.e. illumination for the a/c switch, rear defrost switch, heater fan control, etc.) If you're talking about the speedo/tach/gas/temp guage lights, then the following won't help:
1. Try wiggling that large multi-connector plug--what DONJ mentioned--under the dash a good bit. Check the fuse for instrument panel lights, too. "Pot," which I'm guessing is potentiometer or your dash light dimmer knob, the one to the left of the could be the culprit, too. Try removing the knob's cap (pull off), unscrewing the knob retainer nut, and somehow when you get to its wires, short across the two wires w/ a screwdriver (my guess, I don't know if this is a valid test).
This, in theory, should give full power to the dash lights
