Engine cooling temp for one. Then there's oil pressure. A good argument can be made for no guages other than those provided stock by SAAB. I've got quite a few: oil pressure, oil temp, ambient temp, coolant temp, volt and boost. By nature I'm detail oriented and like having various guages to monitor. Years ago I rode bicycles long distances. From the observor's POV it would seem that during a 100 mile ride there's nothing much for the rider to do except watch the road ahead, be aware of approaching cars from the rear, and just keep going. But even within those few chores, there was a lot going on. The roadway changes constantly and cars from the rear were frequent and unpredictable. You also had to closely monitor your own body temps, fluid levels and energy reserve. A constant state of focus was important to both complete the ride as well as avoid injury. Not that driving a car and pedaling a bike are similar, but I prefer being aware of the goings on around and under me while driving. Guages help fill that need. They're just one more aid for making driver choices. Also - a decent sound system will effectively drown out all engine and tranny noises, so it doesn't hurt to have visual cues. Some people just point their car and go, while others navigate. I can't not navigate. It's people like me that keep the VDO company workers employed.
