MDF is "medium density fibreboard", what most audio shops use to build speaker boxes, etc. It's available at home depot. I used a 1/2" board, a little longer and wider than the base of my amp. The amp + mdf board just just fit between the beam and the bracket. If you drill a hole near one edge of the board, near the center you can thread a 6mm or 8mm (can't remember which) into that bracket. Now you have a board cantilevered on the U bracket... you need to support it somewhere else. I made an "S" bracket shaped like this:
--- <this attaches to the underside of the "beam"
|
|
---- < this attaches to the underside of the mdf board, in the
middle of the right hand side.
The arrangement is not totally rigid, but I had two goals in mind:
1) Mount the amp so it is not visible in the normal areas of the car (ie not under a seat, or in the main trunk)
2) No permanent mods to the car for the audio (ie no drilled holes)
3) Leave room in the tub for the spare, and the Saab "tool box"
I accomplished all of these. I also put speaker carpet over the mdf board, so when you do lift the trunk platform the amp looks very good. You do need a fairly small amp to do this, though. Of course, you could also build a box the to fit snuggly in the pit and put the amp in there, but you may have trouble fitting the tool box in. If you really want a picture, I will borrow a friends camera and get you one...
