No start - got spark...maybe fuel?

85 900 8-valve

Suddenly, while trying to bleed my clutch system the other day, the car stopped starting. It *was* happily running - I shut it off to try putting the car in gear and starting it and the car wouldn't restart.

Checked spark - it was good. Checked to see if the fuel system was pressurizing. It was. Applied power to the fuel pump - it whirred happily. Pre pump is new (2 months old).

Then I tried swapping out an old fuel pump I had around the garage. I put it in and, just to make me crazy, the car started - but then suddenly stalled after running unhappily (had to keep the foot in the gas) for about 20 seconds.

So, I don't think we're talking about a fuel pump problem. Thought about flooding - but the plugs look good. Any guesses to where I should look next? What portions of the fuel injection system may suddenly whack out?
