The ignition switch is operated via gears by the switch lock cylinder (where you put the key). The bottom of the switch lock cylinder engages with two tines in the shifter housing to turn the gears. These tines have most likly broken off. Remove the shift lever and take the trim cover off the center consol to expose the shifter housing. Remove the drivers seat so you have some room to work, it's not too hard and worth it. If you have those star like looking nuts and don't have the right tool handy, get a 12mm socket and cut 3 tines out of the top of it so that they fit into the spaces around the nut (looks like a castle tower when you're done). I used a Dremmel with a cutting wheel to do this. You might need to use a grinder or Dremmel to get the outer diameter down enough to get it in the recess for the nut. Once you get the nuts off, flip the shifter housing over and remove the screws on the bottom to take the top off. The lock core comes out easy by depressing the pin with a piece of wire and pulling on the core with the key installed. The bad news here is that a new shift housing goes for about $160.00, the good news is that you can get one from the junkyard for about $30.00. Reverse the process and you're golden.
