I spent the spring break of my senior year with two friends on a grand tour of the western United states. In a little less than two weeks we drove fro pittsburgh to the grand canyon to San Francisco and then home again. The total mileage was ~5000 and changed the oil right before we left and in the middle of the trip. An alignment would be a good idea - my friends tires were out of true and he ended up buying a new pair in California - high speed travel really exacerbates any problems you may have with poor alignment. When you drive across the desert be sure to stop for gasoline often. Fueling stations are often poorly marked - we almost ran out of gas in the Mojave (in between California and Arizona)
You may also want to check brake pads for wear - I remember smelling the brake pads as we went down several mountains.
With regard to driving style remember that the stress you heap on your car is proportional to the speed at which you drive. New Mexico is very boring, but if you drive through it at 90-110mph (as we did) you will cause excess wear (on my friend's accord it was the tires - that speed also gives you lousy gas mileage) If you use a radar detector remember that many "Smokey Bear's" use stopwatches on overpasses to check your speed.
Be sure as well to have a working camera and lots of film - you will want the pictures later on. If you have the chance, stop in Flagstaff Arizona. I was amazed that such a beautiful town could exsist in the southwest. There are many free campgrounds south of the city that I reccomend.
