Got a whole lot of things done to the car yesterday. Chief among them was solving the intake manifold gasket leak. But then I also hunted down a coolant leak, replaced the hood latch and accelerator cables, and rewired the custom mounted below dash guages. When I adjusted the idle, I must have started and shut off the engine at least 6 times. After everything was put back together, I went to start the car one last time and... nothing. All I got was the start valve initial hit, then nothing. From past experience with this symptom I knew what it was - no fuel pump. Not hearing it spin beneath the trunk at the turn of the key was proof. At first I thought maybe I somehow disconnected the jumper wiring which takes the place of the high boost shut-off switch beneath the dash. But that wiring was sound. Then I thought maybe the fuel pump relay. I replaced it with a known good one and still nothing. The fuse was fine too. I reasoned it had to be something I did beneath the dash while I was re-doing the accelerator and hood release cables. I dreaded having to once again pull the knee pad just to find some loose connection. Then I did something I'd never done before. While turning the key to the run position, I reached beneath the dash and gave the wiring a shake right where it connects to the fuse box through the upper footwell chassis. The fuel pump instantly kicked to life. And then with the motor running - if I gave the wiring a jiggle, I could hear relays clicking. What the F? Have I been driving all this time with some relays inoperable? Of course I'm going to have to solve this problem, but dismantling the fusebox doesn't appeal to me one bit. I do know that the wiring within that box can become loose, because I've already reattached one relay connector that was hanging loose below the relay mounting plate. Perhaps I'll just spray the connection plugs with elec contact cleaner. If that was the problem, then the relay clicking when I jiggle the wiring won't happen. We'll see...
