What year again? '84? The button closes the relay and it then shorts. If it is equally BAD on both circuits (reverse lights and rear defroster), it has to be between the switches and the device (defroster or lights) Do the lights light at all? Probably not. I would look for something in the light cluster in the front or rear. Barring that, look at the wiring or switch. If I were a betting man, I'd bet it was teh reverse light switch. I would look first under the console and check that the reverse switch does not have continuity to ground on either contact in either position (on or off). THis switch gets a lot of cycles and would be suspect. Another possibility is that teh wiring has been cooked by a bad heat shield. good luck.
