My 93 900t has a junkyard 5spd that was put in by prior owner. I have no info on the gearbox other than the fact that it is a 1991 and from a normally aspirated car. It has a slight whine in 4th under acceleration and is always crunchy going into reverse. The worse part is a loading/unloading clunk that comes from the gearbox when you get off and on the gas. It shakes the shifter violently, if you suddenly decelerate. The clunk is not related to engine mounts as they have been replaced. I had a mechanic drive it the other day and he said it not normal and that he would have to put it on the lift to check the ring and pinion play, he also said that it won't fail anytime soon as the whine is barely present. I had it on jackstands this weekend with both wheels off the ground. There seems to be a lot of play in it. If you move one wheel, the other wheel is supposed to move the opposite direction. Well, I can move one wheel about two inches before the other one will even begin to move. Is this ring and pinion play? I know it is not inner drivers or tripods either as those have also been replaced. It seems to be getting worse.

Any thoughts or ideas?
