Yo!
I thought I'd write a few lines to let you know what happened with my stereo. (There's a link below to the original question thread.) It was making some nasty noises from the front right speaker, and I asked, "speaker? or radio?"
Most guys, except RS, said the speakers were likely shot. RS said it was the head unit, bad solder joints. I decided to replace the speakers first to see if that fixed the problem.
I picked up a pair of Pioneer coaxial 4" speakers from a local electronics store (some friends of mine had given me a gift certificate for Christmas, so I really only paid $25 plus tax for the $50 pair.) Installation wasn't too tough -- though I wish Saab didn't use Torx screws for everything. My Torx screwdriver set is a little long for working under the windshield, and I don't have a Torx stubby. But I got the panels out, took out the old speakers, and installed the new ones. Took about 45 minutes, a glass of lemonade, and a bathroom break (that lemonade!) to do the whole job.
Once I had the speakers in, I turned on the radio and turned up the volume. Nice! The sound was definitely crisper than it had been with the old speakers -- better presence and clarity. The difference was distinctly noticeable. Now, of course, I'm considering upgrading the rear ones, too. I might do that 6x9 adaptor trick and put some good 6x9's back there instead of going with the 4x10's.
Unfortunately, when I turned up the bass, I got the same farting electronic noise from the front right speaker I'd had before. It seems, maybe, that the new speakers are a little less prone to that noise (required higher volume and increased low frequency output to induce it?), but maybe not. It's still there.
So, RS, I think you were right! The culprit is my 15 year old AM/FM cassette radio. I'm going to have to replace it. I went to the Crutchfield site and saw a few FM/cassette decks for under $100, with 2x20W RMS power (45W peak per channel) so that will probably be my next expenditure. I'm going to shop around town and see if I can beat that price before I order.
Thanks, everyone, for the dialog on this topic.
